Giraffe Cake

We had an order to do a giraffe themed cake and ta-dah! Here it is:

MAKING THE GIRAFFE

We made the giraffe out of gumpaste about 2 days before and once it was rock solid, we covered it in yellow fondant (Wilton Buttercup yellow x Red Man yellow). After which, we added the little details!

If you need to, use something to help support the structure  while you work on it.

The birthday boy specially requested for the giraffe to be holding a volley ball and hand ball.

MAKING THE CAKE

This was a blueberry cake with blueberry frosting. To get the recipe for the cake, click here

The bottom layer was a 10" square cake, and the top was 8". We covered both in yellow fondant and used brown fondant to resemble the giraffe's spots. To finish it off, we added a ribbon around both tiers.

Blueberry Cake

Who doesn't love a good blueberry cake? It's soft and moist, with the refreshing taste of juicy blueberries.

Ingredients:

  • Unsalted butter (1/2 cup)
  • Buttermilk (1 cup)
  • Cake flour (2 cups)
  • White sugar (1/2 cup)
  • Brown sugar (1/4 cup)
  • 2 eggs (or 3 small eggs)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoons salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 cups fresh blueberries (or 1 tin of canned blueberries)

  • Recipe:

    1. Preheat your oven to 204 °C
    2. Cream the sugar and butter until smooth
    3. Mix in the buttermilk and eggs until combined
    4. Combine all your dry ingredients in a separate bowl
    5. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and carefully fold it in
    6. Add in your blueberries and mix until they are incorporated
    7. Bake for about 19 - 20 mins
    8. Enjoy

  • TwinnieFoods Tips:
    • Coat the fresh blueberries with just a little bit of flour to ensure that the berries don't sink to the bottom of the cake.
    • This recipe makes an 8" round cake.
    • If you are using a deeper cake tin, bake the cake for a longer time.
    • Use 3/4 cup of white sugar if you like the cake to be sweet.

    Peanut Butter & Chocolate Cookies

We have just discovered SORTED and their amazing recipes and couldn't resist making their

Unfortunately, we only had one egg and didn't have any crips, so we substituted it with corn flakes. It turned out very nicely; very crunchy on the outside and soft in the centre of the cookie. We also added some peanut butter with cornflakes on top for some added crunch! Yummy.

We really LOVE this recipe; it's so easy and yet incredibly delicious.

    A fishy cake

We recently just finished baking a fish themed cake- more specifically, a Discus inspired cake.

For those who don't know what a Discus fish looks like (we didn't exactly know what it was either), it looks like this:

    MAKING THE DISCUS

We made the fish out of gumpaste that Dalia coloured a nice pale orange. Using a balling tool (or your fingers if you don't have one), flatten the sides of the fish so that the fins look thinner than the rest of the fish's body. For the fins, we used a small knife to make the marks and used the tip of a straw to make the scales of the fish.

Using an edible food marker, draw lines/ spots (depending on what kind of Discus you want to make) to create the markings on the fish. Just let your creativity flow!

To finish it off, paint the whole fish with a mixture of yellow food colouring and vodka (don't worry, as the paint dries, the Vodka will evaporate). Of course, don't forget the little fishy's eye! Just use black fondant and place it on top of a slightly larger piece of orange fondant that we outlined with a little brown food colouring to make the eyes pop!

    DECORATING THE CAKE

For the sides of the cake, we used a cookie cutter to cut out the fondant circles and placed a starfish on each coloured circle. As for the sand, we crumbled the cake scraps we had over the top. (Brushing the cake with a little water helps secure the crumbs.) We then added some colourful pebbles made of out fondant. As a final touch, we glazed the name on the cake board with some edible gold glitter.

    And that's all to it!
